ITM Program Requirements

I. Course Work

All students must take a minimum of twelve courses and fulfill the MBA course requirement, including:

  • Four courses in information/technology-related areas (e.g., computer science or electrical engineering).
  • Year-long Management and Markets course (Business Studies 2000), which counts as two courses.
  • Four graduate courses related to the program, but outside of DEAS, including at least one HBS graduate course and one approved course in statistics.
  • Two elective courses.

II. MBA Course Requirement

Students who do not have an MBA are required to take either the first semester of the MBA program or five second-year MBA courses, including one course with a general management focus.

Students who have a non-HBS MBA are required to take one approved second-year MBA course in general management.

III. Exams

General Exam: At the end of the first year, students take this exam based on the material in the Management and Markets course.

Special Field Exam: Students take an oral exam by the third year based on their chosen academic area.

IV. Thesis

All students must write a dissertation that represents an original and significant contribution to knowledge.
