Cambridge, Mass.--Harvard University seniors = Andrew=20 Evert Carlson, an engineering concentrator with = a focus=20 in electrical engineering; Gabriella S. Rosen, a = history=20 and science concentrator; and Stephanie = Alexandra=20 Stuart, a biology concentrator, are the winners = of the=20 2003 Captain Jonathan Fay Prize, which is = awarded by the=20 Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at = Harvard=20 University. Radcliffe Institute Dean Drew Gilpin = Faust=20 announced the winners--who will graduate with = bachelor=20 degrees on June 5, 2003--at the Radcliffe = Association's=20 annual Strawberry Tea on Wednesday, May 28, = 2003.

The Fay Prize honors members of Harvard's = graduating=20 class who have produced the most outstanding,=20 imaginative work or piece of original research = in any=20 field, which can take the form of a thesis, = class=20 research or creative arts project. Candidates = for the=20 Fay Prize were chosen from among the nominees = for=20 Harvard College's Thomas T. Hoopes Prize, = awarded=20 annually for outstanding scholarly work or = research.

"The three research theses that have captured = this=20 year's Fay Prize are as exceptional as they are=20 diverse," said Faust. "It is fitting that these = projects=20 be honored by the Radcliffe Institute, which = pursues=20 work in a similarly wide range of academic = endeavors and=20 fields of study."

Carlson was chosen for his thesis titled "A=20 Comprehensively Integrated Smart Motor Control = Chip." A=20 resident of Lowell House and native of = Londonderry,=20 N.H., Carlson designed a small motor = controller--a=20 silicon chip--that has four distinct functions: = power=20 control, signal processing, position sensing and = motion=20 recording and playback. Useful for controlling = motors in=20 the one-watt range, Carlson's miniaturized chip=20 (approximately 16,000 transistors in an area 2.5 = square=20 millimeters) has the potential to replace = existing=20 systems that are roughly 50 times its space and=20 weight.

Roger Brockett, An Wang Professor of Computer = Science=20 and Electrical Engineering, and Gu-Yeon Wei, = assistant=20 professor of electrical engineering, nominated = Carlson=20 for the Hoopes Prize. Brockett said Carlson's = work "has=20 the potential to become truly ubiquitous," and = Wei=20 called it "exceptional in both its breadth and = depth."=20 This September, Carlson will begin doctoral = studies in=20 electrical engineering at the University of = California=20 at Berkeley.

Rosen's winning thesis, "'How Many Selves = Have We?'=20 The Theory, Therapy, and Legacy of Morton = Prince's=20 Breadth Psychology," analyzes and contextualizes = the=20 work of Morton Prince, the=20 late-nineteenth-/early-twentieth-century = psychotherapist=20 who conducted a once-famous study of a multiple=20 personality. Interweaving the theories of = Prince's=20 contemporaries, Sigmund Freud and = late-nineteenth=20 century psychologist Pierre Janet, Rosen's work = presents=20 a detailed history of the debate on the nature = of=20 consciousness in Prince's work, as well as a = study of=20 the interactions between theory building and = clinical=20 engagement.

Rosen was nominated by Anne Harrington, = professor of=20 the history of science, who calls the work "a = subtle,=20 layered and--I think--deeply digested essay, = written=20 with considerable elegance." This fall, Rosen, = who grew=20 up in Berkeley, Calif., and is a resident of = Pforzheimer=20 House, will be pursuing her M.D. at Mount Sinai = School=20 of Medicine in the Humanities in Medicine = program.

Stuart was chosen for her thesis titled "What = Sets=20 the Latitudinal Limit of the Mangrove Habit?" A = former=20 resident and current affiliate of Dunster House, = Stuart=20 grew up in Monterey, Calif., and holds dual=20 U.S./Australian citizenship. Her thesis's title = question=20 was conclusively answered by the data she = collected from=20 a series of field and lab experiments conducted = in two=20 hemispheres. While examining the causes of the=20 restriction of mangrove species to tropical and=20 subtropical latitudes, she paid specific = attention to=20 the interaction of saline substrate and freezing = tolerance in woody tissue.

Noel Michele Holbrook SB '83, professor of = biology,=20 nominated Stuart, predicting that Stuart's study = is one=20 that "will soon become a textbook example of how = xylem=20 physiology can shape the world around us." This = summer,=20 Stuart will continue her mangrove studies in = Australia,=20 where she will spend the upcoming year. In the = near=20 future, she plans to pursue graduate studies in = plant=20 physiology.

The Captain Jonathan Fay Prize was = established in=20 1907 by Joseph Storey Fay in memory of his=20 great-grandfather, Captain Jonathan Fay. An=20 interdisciplinary committee, convened by the = Institute,=20 made the final selection.
