La Paz
Flying into La Paz can be a real shock: the airport lies at over 13,000 feet in altitude, and getting off the plane from Lima we immediately felt light-headed and dizzy. La Paz is one of the highest cities in the world, as high as Lhasa in Tibet. We spent the first day just acclimatizing and exploring the busy back streets of this wonderful city. This is the Mercado de Hechiceria, or "witches' market", where vendors sell all manner of bizarre products including dehydrated llama fetuses (used as an offering to Pachamama when constructing a new building).
