Salar de Uyuni

After a day in La Paz we headed out to the remote town of Uyuni, in the southwestern corner of the country. This region is quite remote and the only way to see it is by four-wheel drive over endless dirt roads. The landscape is barren desert, and is called the altiplano, a high plain that lies at over 12,000 feet in elevation. Uyuni is 12+ hours from La Paz by bus or train, and although few Bolivians live in this inhospitable region it's becoming increasingly popular for tourism, mainly owing to the bizarre and beautiful landscapes in the area.

This is the road leading into the Salar de Uyuni, a massive salt flat covering over 12,000 sq km. The vast white expanse of the Salar stretches as far as the eye can see.
