Madurai

In Delhi we bought an air travel pass from Indian Airlines which allowed us to fly virtually anywhere in the country for 21 days. This was a great way to see a large amount of India without having to take too many long trains.

The next day we flew to Madurai, in the "deep south" of India, in the state of Tamil Nadu. South India could not be more different than the north -- it's like another country! Madurai is an ancient city which boasts several very important Hindu temples. This is the view out of our hotel room over the ornate Kundalagar temple. Twice a day the temple elephant would visit outside the hotel lobby to bestow blessings, and get a meal of milk and chapatis.
