Madurai

One of the towers of the enormous Shree Meenakhsi-Sundareshwarar temple in Madurai. This was by far the most amazing and beautiful place that we visited in India. Shree Meenakshi is one of the largest temples in India and consists of twelve large towers such as the one shown here, surrounding a large tank and innumerable shrines. As non-Hindus we were not allowed into the inner sanctum of the temple, but a large amount of the place was open to us. The temple is constantly buzzing with activity - worshippers milling about, musicians playing, all manner of inscrutable ceremonies taking place. The temple has no fewer than 3 elephants which will bless you (by raising its trunk over your head) for a couple of rupees.
