Kerala is home to a unique rural community which lives along a vast network of rivers and canals, known as the backwaters. Most of these places have no roads or railway lines, so the only way to get around is by boat. From Varkala we took the train to Alleppuzha, where we hired a boat for the day to see these fascinating backwater villages. While the other tourists were packed on large ferries together, we had our own boat and driver - a great way to get away from the crowds.
