The next day we went to Cochin, an old port city on the Keralan coast, where European traders have passed through for centuries in search of spices. This city reminded us a lot of Melaka in Malaysia. In Cochin there are a number of places to see kathakali, one of the traditional dance forms of Kerala. We attended a short performance put on by some students of one of the kathakali schools there. The performance consists of a bizarre combination of music, singing, dance, mudras (hand gestures), highly-controlled facial expressions, and of course these outrageous costumes.
