Baiau Village

This old man, named Ningal, was really something. He is deaf and totally unable to communicate (nobody speaks sign language here). Yet, he owns land, pigs, has a wife, and seems to be a successful contributing member of the community. He is also very aware of everything going on -- as we were preparing the mumu he went off into the jungle to hack down a bunch of banana leaves to throw on top. Simon also told me that his skill in raising pigs is unparalleled.
