Gunung Bromo

After a few days in Yogyakarta we headed for Gunung Bromo, a beautiful set of three volcanoes in eastern Java. This involved an all-day ride in a cramped minibus with no air conditioning -- when we disembarked we were all covered in dust and soot from the ride. The next morning we woke up very early (about 4 a.m.) to climb to the summit of the active volcano by sunrise. Gunung Bromo (7845 ft/2392 m) is the smoking crater on the left; the larger crater on the right is Gunung Batok (8003 ft/2440 m), which is dormant.
