This was Noor-e-Punjab's second foray into the annual Bhangra Blowout competition in Washington DC. On April 4th teams from all over the north east competed at the Constitution Hall, making enough noise to keep everyone at the White House awake.
MIT put up a great performance, with its usual emphasis on traditional bhangra. The team was larger this year which gave it even more stage presence, and we performed a traditional gidda, which was a great success. Unfortunately much to our surprise, completely unexpected teams won and hip hop and stunts seemed to gain more with the judges than traditional bhangra dance.
However there were also some unexpected highlights this year. Our neighbors, Boston University, put up a very traditional and touching performance with live dhol and a live singing. Other highlights were the performance by University of Maryland, the girls from University of North Carolina, and the gidda by George Washington University. Our team is proud to have competed, and from my vantage point did a superb and worthy performance. Balle Shera!
